Welcome to America

On Nov 28, 1635, Richard Baker arrived in America from England.  He landed in Boston, MA.  It is not documented when or where he left from England or the ship he was a passenger on.  He arrived by himself at the age of 21.

Richard was 1614 in Kent, England to John and Elizabeth Baker.  He married Faith Withington in 1639 in Dorchester, MA.  In 1642, it was documented that he was a freeman in Dorchester, MA.

A Freeman is a term commonly used as an English or American Colonial  expression in Puritan times. A man had to be a member of the Church to be a freeman. In Colonial Plymouth, a man did not need to be a member of the Church, but he had to be elected to this privilege by the General Court. Being a freeman carried with it the right to vote, and by 1632 only freemen could vote in Plymouth.

Initially, any male first entering into a colony, or just recently having become a member of one of the local churches, was formally not free. They were considered common. Such persons were never forced to work for another individual (as an indentured servant), per se, but their movements were carefully observed, and if they veered from the Puritanical ideal, they were asked to leave the colony. If they stayed or later returned to the colony, they were occasionally put to death.
There was an unstated probationary period that the prospective "freeman" needed to go through, and if he did pass this probationary period of time – usually one to two years – he was allowed his freedom.

A Freeman was said to be free of all debt, owing nothing to anyone except God Himself.

Happy Birthday John Campbell

Happy 340th Birthday to John Campbell.  John was born November 16, 1674  on his father's estate "Drumboden", seven miles from Londonderry, Ireland.

John married Grissel "Grace" Hay in 1695 in Londonderry, Londonderry, Ireland.  In this union they would have ten children.  Through their son John II it would lead to the Bay family line.

In 1726, John and Grace settled in Sweet Awe, Dongal Township, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania. In 1730, They moved to Fincastle Co., Virginia. Bought land in Orange, Augusta Co., Virginia.  Grace lived 93 years.

Through research, there are some conflicting dates, though the general information seems to be same.

Happy Wedding Anniversary

Happy 390th year wedding to Richard Burt & Jane Adams.  Richard and Jane were married on November 16, 1624 at St. Mary's Whitechaple in Middlesex, England.

Both Richard and Jane were born in Dorchester, Devon, England.  Richard in 1600 and Jane 1603.  Though the date is unknown they move from England and settle in Taunton, Bristol, Massachusetts.  Richard died on October 26, 1647, and unfortunately at this time Jane's death date is unknown.

In this union they had a son, Richard II, it is through him that the family line would travel down to the Bays.

Here is the record of marriage for Richard & Jane.

I believe this is St. Marys Whitechaple in Middlesex England.  The church was demolished.  It stood at the eastern end of Whitechapel High Street, at the south side of the beginning of the Whitechapel, or Mile-End Road.
